Hey, ladies!

Have you listened to the newer Alessia Cara Single: Scars to Your Beautiful? No? Take a gander and watch/listen before you read the rest!!!

What is it talking about?

Alessia’s song is rare and beautiful in a time of music when rappers use similes to make women feel like being a whore is the only way to feel beautiful and loved. Most artists I find that have a similar message as her come from the Christian scene, but not her. You can hear Alessia’s single playing on radio stations across the nation. Alessia released it back in 2015, but she started getting nation and global attention from it last year.

Alessia talked about her meaning about the song to iHeart Radio saying:

“Whether it’s in media, or in just regular life. We are expected to do, and to look like so many different things, and it’s so hard to keep up with sometimes. Everything told to us, whether it’s indirectly or directly, they get into our heads and it got to the point where now girls can’t look at themselves and just feel happy anymore. We have to find something that we don’t like, or something that we have to compare ourselves too. And that can get so tiring. It’s just such a wrong message to send to people, and it’s just a bad thing to put in our heads. So I wanted to make a song that was saying to block out all that noise, and to just appreciate yourself, and not go to these extremes to love yourself.”

She speaks so much truth to that! I struggled with body image as I grew up. (Click here to Read my story). The idea that women and girls need to conform to the ways of media has hurt growing girls’ individuality. This can be changed and fought against if we have the courage to stand up!

Emma Watson’s quote says it all for me:

“I don’t want other people to decide who I am. I want to decide that for myself.”

We, as women and young ladies, need to adapt this mindset that we need to decide who we are–NOT the media! Girls, we were made on purpose no matter what others tell you! My last quote I want to share with you is from Psalm 139:14 and it is the base of this website. It says:

“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”

This is my life verse because it reminds me my heavenly father made me and his work in me is wonderful. The last part of this verse was a challenge to grasp. The verse says I know that FULL well. Full to me in the verse is saying I know it without a doubt. It took me a while to get to that point and it that might be the case for you too. That’s okay. God is patient and He will wait for you but know talking to Him will help the process.

God Bless,

Star Trek’s New Frontier

new frontierStar Trek Beyond exceeded my expectations for this third installment in the new series. I have always been a fan of Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto playing the iconic roles of Kirk and Spock. As I have watched them grow into their roles, I see the depth start to settle in their personalities. Even though many Star Trek fanatics are looking for the representation of the original Kirk and Spock, I don’t believe that is possible. Not that Chris and Zach aren’t capable of doing this, but the circumstances are quite different. In the first new installment, we watch Kirk grow up without a father, who inspired him to be in Starfleet. This mere change in the timeline changes Kirk’s whole view on life. Spock also has this new reality that is going to change and shape him into somebody different than the original. The effect from the different timelines brings in a darker and a more damaged storyline as the installments have progressed.

new frontierBy the Beyond installment, both Spock and Kirk have dealt with the death of parents, betrayal from one of their own, coming to terms with the possibility of dying themselves, and now the uncertainty of where they want to go next in their lives. So with all of these darker themes plaguing their lives, it isn’t surprising the turn in character development Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto had to figure out for the ‘newer’ versions of Kirk and Spock.

Do I Recommend?

After watching the movie, I would say I enjoyed this installment as much as I have enjoyed the others. The characters have become a part of my fandom family. If I had to rate the film I would put a 7/10 on it. The only reason I would dock the three points I did is because it does feel somewhat like a Star Wars movie. The battle scenes, overcoming the death of parents and mentors, fighting against an evil that was onnew frontierce good screams Star Wars.Even some of the artwork released for the film resembles the look of a Lucas film (see picture to the left.) Maybe Star Trek and Star Wars have always had the closeness and we are just starting to realize it or maybe there are many of the similar influences involved in both coughabramscough, but you can’t deny there is something familiar.

Now, I am not trying to start a Star Trek vs. Star Wars debate, because if I had to choose I am Star Wars all the way, but I have respect for the Trek world. So, all-in-all great movie, great cast, and a fantastic storyline. Go see it!

The Jungle Book — Bigger and Better than Ever!

The Jungle Book Movie Review

Jungle Book

The Jungle Book has always been a favorite movie of mine growing up. Running around the jungle with Mowgli, Baloo, and Bagheera, while staying out of trouble with Shere Khan and King Louie, was always a fun and exciting adventure.  That was always in animated 2D and the scary factor was like a 3 on the Disney villain scale, but after watching the live action Shere Khan’s scary factor went from a 3 to a 10 on the Disney villain scale.  Even King Louie’s intense factor went from a 1 to a 6 or 7 with how massive they made him look, and then add in Christopher Walken’s voice to put it over the edge.  Oh, and I will say if you hate snakes close your eyes when Kai comes into play. They made that snake long and massive, probably close to the size it would be in re-life, but still very scary…

Anywho, Disney gave us the same characters we love and grew up with, but with some new back stories and adventures. I don’t want to spoil them for you because it will give the new story features away, but I will tell you it is worth the watch.

Disney’s live-action remakes have been blowing my mind with each new one that comes out. Technically, it all started with 101 Dalmatians in 1996 and randomly throughout the years after that you would see an animated tale come to life in live-action. (I am not talking about modern adaptions either because that would be a book in itself). Then, of course, you had Alice in Wonderland as a kind of extension from the animated classic, but it all recently took off with Maleficent, which totally changed my perspective on the evil witch and I love that.  Then there has been Cinderella and now the Jungle Book.

Disney has a way of elegantly crafting a story. There is something rich and fantastical when you enter into a Disney movie and Jungle Book will be hard to top. The time and technique it had to take to make the animals look real, but also have those human qualities plus making them larger than normal is something I cannot fathom! They truly are gifted and I can’t wait to see their next live-action movie!

What’s next you ask?

  1. 2016
    1. Alice Through the Looking Glass
    2. Pete’s Dragon
  2. 2017
    1. Beauty & the Beast

Beauty & the BeastPersonally, I wish Beauty & the Beast was coming out this year, because Belle is my favorite princess plus the fact she is being played by Emma Watson, one of my favorite actresses who knows how to play a bookworm.

So grab your family, buy some movie tickets, and settle in for the jungle adventure of your life. What do I rate this new Disney classic? 9 stars out of 10!

May Fourth–Let’s Celebrate A Generation Changing Franchise

May Fourth

Star Wars

May Fourth

“May the Fourth be with You, Always”

Star Wars captured the nation’s heart in 1977 when the immortal crawl and theme music blasted in the theater. Who knew back then that even today we would still be making movies about the ways of the force. I personally wasn’t alive or even a thought in my middle school aged parents mind when Darth Vader made his epic entrance with his own culture-defining music into the rebel ship to capture Leia, who we find out in the second movie is actually his daughter. (Plot hole? I think so.) I am not here to review the movies. No. I am here to celebrate them. Today we look at the movies that have moved generations and since Disney has taken full reign of them, is going to continue to impact future generations.

I remember the first time watching Star Wars with my family when I hit middle school. I loved it and so did my brother. That is when the wrapping paper roll sword fights turned to lightsaber fights. That is when instead of being a princess or a cop we wanted to be Jedi.  There is something about a world of fantasy that gives a child hope and expands the imagination. I still to this day will not watch the part in Return of the Jedi when the slave girl and the Pig get ate by Rancor. I close my eyes and plug my ears. Why? Because I remember the first time I watched it and had nightmares for days, but I still continue to watch Star Wars because it is a part of who I am.

That is what I love about the franchise is it defines more than just the first generation that saw it. Today you still see Star Wars everywhere and now since the new movie that is now out in theaters it consumes our world. From T-shirts to toys to actual themed weddings, Star Wars is in almost every household. It baffles me when I meet someone who doesn’t like Star Wars. I just want to lock them in a room and give them a full commentary of why it is one of the greatest film series of all time. Now yes, you are probably saying, “Ashley, there were the…other three…”

Trust me I am trying not to think about them as I write this. Every May Fourthstory has those moments where it teeters because good and horrible and the Episodes 1-3 are those for Star Wars, but look at it this way there is only up from there! Disney did that! The Force Awakens is great because it bringing in a whole new generation into the Star Wars fandom. Yes, there are many similarities between A New Hope and The Force Awakens, but I think it was done elegantly. It allowed the new generation of Star Wars characters to emerge in a well-balanced way. I will be the first to say I bawled when Kylo killed Han and when I say bawled I let loose tears that filled the ocean. Han Solo is and will always be my favorite Star Wars character, but I understand why they did it.

May FourthSo today isn’t just a day to watch a Star Wars Marathon or wear all the gear you can. Today is a day to appreciate what Star Wars has given us. It has given us a story we can tell to our children and their children as a parable about good and evil. It has given us the importance of love and family over power and money. It has given us hope that even when the evils of the world are at its highest point that good can still win as long as there are people to fight for it.

Star Wars will always be our past, our present, and our future.

“Remember…the Force will be with you, always.”

Let me introduce myself

Introduce Myself Hey, guys! I’m Sam and I’m new to the whole blogging scene so bear with me!

First off- a little bit about myself. I am a junior at Carroll High School. I work at Pathway Community Church as a childcare worker. I have a strong passion for art and I’m an aspiring graphic designer. I have two brothers, two dogs, and a boyfriend. My mother is my best friend and I don’t go out much. I have a health condition called POTS disorder (which I won’t go into detail about now because I’m sure that will come soon).

I have been through it all. From abusive relationships to high school sweethearts. From being the social butterfly to being the girl who hides in the corner. From being the so-called “party girl” to being Pentecostal. From being a cheerleader to having a life-altering disorder. There’s very little that I can say I haven’t tackled in my life. And those are the things that I’ll be blogging about.

Being a teenage girl is hard enough. Being a responsible, strong, God-loving teenage girl is a different story.

But it’s my story.

Oh Disney! Looking at Their Newest Animated Hit Zootopia!

Zootopia

Zootopia Review

Everyone knows Disney has a way of taking a story and bringing it to life and Zootopia, their newest animated masterpiece, keeps that tradition going. Being set in a fictional world where zoo animals take on the role of humans, Disney creates a story, which entertains kids and brings up modern-day issues for adults. How?
Well, the story is about a bunny, Hopps, who grew up wanting to be a police officer, but everyone kept telling her it couldn’t happen because of her size. Even in the academy at first it looked as if she was going to fail, but in the end, she worked so hard that she was top of her class, but the torment doesn’t end there. Once she gets to the force in Zootopia, the Chief still doesn’t believe in her and puts her on ticket duty–the easiest and safest job on the force.

During her stint as a ticket jockey, she stumbles into the biggest case in the city and putting her job on the line she must solve it in 48 hours with the most unlikely of partners–a fox named Nick Wilde.

I am not going to spoil the ending, but I will say it is worth the watch! Teens and older will understand the most sophisticated humor while younger ones will just have a great laugh. Also, what is great about this story is the messages behind it.

1. You can become whoever you want as long as you put in the hard work.

2. “Life’s a little bit messy. We all make mistakes. No matter what type of animal you are, change starts with you.” Judy Hopps

3. You should never judge someone on their shape, size, ethnicity, gender, etc. Preconceived notions are almost always wrong.

I can see Zootopia being a great tool to teach equality to younger generations because this is something we are continuously fighting against and have been since the dawn of time, or you know when we got kick out of Eden. I definitely give this movie 9 out of 10 stars!

So don’t wait! Join the adventures of Officer Hopps and Nick Wilde through world wind case to save their way of life!
